Welcome to Writing at Queens
Welcome to Writing at Queens
Writing and communication are central to a Queens College education. Our writing curriculum equips students to navigate the diverse and evolving demands of the 21st century, both in their fields of study and beyond. Writing at Queens (WaQ) supports this mission by supporting the curriculum and providing resources that empower both faculty and students. Our work emphasizes writing as a practice shaped by context—disciplinary, institutional, personal, and political—and fosters a vibrant culture of writing across campus.
The mission of Writing at Queens (WaQ) is to support and administer the writing curriculum at Queens College, providing resources for all faculty and students. These resources emphasize writing practices and the role of writing within context, whether disciplinary, institutional, personal or political. Our activities serve to encourage, stimulate, and support a culture of writing on campus.

First Year Writing
The First-Year Writing program prepares Queens College students to enter a scholarly conversation in writing and to gain experience and confidence to communicate with a variety of audiences both inside and outside of the classroom.

The Writing Center
The Queens College Writing Center (QCWC) offers one-to-one writing support and writing workshops for Queens College students. As a multilingual academic and intellectual support space where Queens College students work in collaboration with peer tutors to improve their writing, QCWC supports undergraduate and graduate students across disciplines, encouraging students’ growth as writers at any stage of the writing process.

W Courses/Writing Intensive
Writing Intensive (W) courses contribute to the overall goals for student writing at Queens College. Taken after the completion of First Year Writing, provide the opportunity to learn writing practices specific to a discipline or field.

Resources for Multilingual Students
Queens College students bring with them more than 80 languages, and the writing curriculum is designed to build on this rich linguistic diversity. While all students admitted to Queens College can take English 110, some may feel less confident about reading, writing, or speaking in English in academic settings. For those who feel more comfortable using a language other than English, the First Year Writing guide offers recommendations for courses to take before or alongside English 110.

Our Work in Action
Writing at Queens supports the college’s writing curriculum through a wide range of projects, including faculty development workshops, assessment initiatives, and curriculum design. Recent highlights include our collaboration with CETLL on the Pedagogy of Place summer workshop, the creation of a Generative AI teaching toolkit, and a series of workshops on assignment design, teaching multilingual writers, and developing field-specific writing outcomes. Our award-winning faculty bring expertise that extends beyond Queens, sharing their research at national and international conferences and publications.

Writing Minor
The Writing Minor at Queens College is designed to offer students extensive practice writing to enhance their majors. The program enables students to gain experience writing in a range of genres and media–in preparation for life and work in the twenty-first century. The curriculum is flexible, to enable students to pursue their goals and interests. It emphasizes the professional contexts and continuous digital innovations that shape what it means to be a successful writer.
