Secondary Education and Youth Services (SEYS) offers seven distinct programs that lead to certification, Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees or post-Master’s extension credits.

Our Undergraduate Initial Certification Program entails a sequence of courses in a subject discipline along with courses in the department of SEYS. Students typically enter the education part of their studies when they are second semester sophomores and have completed a certain number of subject discipline courses (specific details are given under each SEYS program). Students completing this program earn a Bachelor’s degree and initial teaching certification.

For undergraduates planning graduate work in Secondary Education, consider the Accelerated Masters program. Take up to 12 graduate credits while still an undergrad and have them count to your BA and transfer to the SEYS Advanced Certificate degree.

Our Graduate Initial Certification Program is designed for students who already hold an undergraduate or graduate degree but who do not have the required courses to qualify for a teaching certificate. Graduates from this program gain initial certification.

Our Master of Arts in Education (MAT) Programs are for students who hold an undergraduate degree but who do not have the required courses to qualify for a teaching certificate. Graduates from this program gain initial and advanced certification and a MAT degree.

Our Master of Science in Education (MSED) Programs are for students who already hold an initial certificate in a teaching discipline and who wish to pursue advanced studies in education. Graduates from this program gain advanced certification and a MSED degree.

Our Master of Science in Applied Literacy is a fully online master’s program that can be taken by teachers of any content area and will lead them to their Professional Certification through the NYSED Individual Pathway.

Our Post Master’s extension programs offer a variety of courses for educators seeking salary differentials and continued professional development in their field.
