Queens College Choral Society Presents Verdi’s Requiem at Colden Center Saturday May 17

Flushing, NY, April 7, 2025—The Queens College Choral Society will perform Verdi’s Requiem on Saturday, May 17, at 8 pm, in Colden Center, part of Kupferberg Center for the Arts at Queens College. .

Requiem is a work of classical music known for its magnitude and intensity. Part of the work originated in 1868 when Verdi composed the movement, Libera me, as part of a larger mass with multiple contributing composers to honor opera composer Gioachino Rossini on the anniversary of his death. The mass for Rossini was never performed and years later, with Libera me already in place, Verdi composed Requiem to honor novelist-poet Alessandro Manzoni on the anniversary of his death. Verdi conducted the premiere of the Requiem on May 22, 1874, in the church of San Marco, in Milan, Italy, chosen for its size and acoustics.

The Queens College Choral Society will be joined by the Queens College Treble Choir, Vocal Ensemble, and Orchestra, along with soloists Mikayla Sager (soprano), Renée Tatum (mezzo-soprano), Victor Starsky (tenor), and David Pittsinger (bass-baritone).

Tickets are $25 ($5 for students with a valid QCID). Parking is free. To purchase tickets, please visit: https://kupferbergcenter.org. Ticketmaster fees apply. For special family pricing, contact Emily John, Choral Society administrative coordinator, at qcchoralsociety@gmail.com.

The society typically performs two concerts a year—in December and May—devoted to the great masterpieces of choral literature such as Verdi’s Requiem, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, Bach’s Magnificat, and Handel’s Messiah. The QCCS has also performed multiple premieres of new works, including the recent premiere of 1001 Voices: A Symphony for Queens, commissioned by the Queens Symphony Orchestra. The group is open to singers of all backgrounds and skill levels, from high school students to adult community members.
