 Educational Leadership

The Educational Leadership Program is at the post-master's level and leads to New York State Certification as School Building Leader. Courses are also offered that may be applied toward meeting the requirements for the New York State Certificate of School District Leader.

The college will admit to the program in Educational Leadership only those whom it considers to be potentially outstanding leaders in schools and communities. The program aims to develop the personal qualities and professional skills essential for educational leadership. To this end, it provides opportunities of many kinds, including seminar courses, simulated experiences, and planned fieldwork experiences. Each candidate’s program is planned individually to make certain it includes the graduate studies that are needed to improve his/her background for the professional career for which he/she is preparing. Candidates are carefully selected from among those applicants who meet specific qualifications.

All candidates must meet appropriate academic and scholarship standards to remain in the program and complete the program.  Candidates must also demonstrate appropriate personal, professional, and ethical conduct as established by the program and the educational leadership profession (e.g., ethical and professional standards).  All candidates are subject to review, and sanctions, including dismissal, as a result of academic and/or professional deficiencies.

For specific program information, go to Educational Leadership Handbook.

 Admission

Openings are competitively filled; admission cannot be guaranteed to all who meet the stated requirements. Applicants must have a Master's degree from an accredited college or university (or the foreign equivalent) and an average of B in study relevant to teaching.

New Program!
Leadership and Bilingual Advanced Certificate
The purpose of this program is to prepare educational leaders in education and policy at the community, school, district and state level. Specifically, candidates will develop knowledge and skills to work with bilingual populations, support all school staff working with multilingual learners and promote systemic supports for dual and transitional bilingual programs.

In partnership with the New York State Education Department, The City University of New York at Queens College has developed an Educational Leadership and Bilingual Advanced Certificate Program. This new and exciting program will train and support future educational leaders with the knowledge and skill set that is needed to work with the bilingual children, underrepresented groups and communities in New York. The new program provides courses in the School Building Leadership program and highlights the Bilingual services needed to provide to students grades K-12.
