Into the City of Women

Ruth Landes’ Photo collection of Brazilian Candomblé (1938-1939)

The archival photographic exhibition “In the City of Women” features key photographs of Afro-Brazilian women and historic leaders of the Candomblé religion from the Ruth Landes Papers of the Smithsonian Museum. The exhibit includes curated photographs and background information about prominent Candomblé priestesses, sites of worship (terreiros), and popular culture from Landes’ anthropological fieldwork from 1938-1939 in Salvador, Brazil.
