About the Program
The Advertising Major Prepares students for careers in advertising and marketing across interdisciplinary categories.
The major prepares students with the skills to work in marketing management and ad creative generally while having the opportunity to specialize through minors or certificate programs.
Our Advertising program is primarily a critical advertising studies degree program, focusing on the history and effects of advertising. As you make your way through the major, you will gain experience and understanding of the way advertising shapes and reflects our world. Projects are designed to increase your portfolio and prepare you for the industry. Our goal is to help you “be in the room” to better shape the future of the advertising industry.

Advertising Major FAQs
How many electives do I need to take?4 Do they have to be on the list in DegreeWorks? No. Why not? When the advertising major was created, it was supposed to be in conjunction with other departments. We have found over time that classes are not offered consistently, so we needed to provide other alternatives. What electives can I take? You can take any class (200-level or above) that is related to advertising. For example, Economics now offers BUS 243 — Marketing, and will be offering it every semester. Other departments sometimes offer classes in consumer behavior or design classes for advertising. BE AWARE: These classes are likely to have prerequisites, so plan accordingly, and no, we cannot waive prerequisites from other departments. NOTE: THESE CLASSES MUST BE APPROVED AHEAD OF TIME BY THE ADVERTISING DIRECTOR. I registered for a class after I got it approved, and it’s still not showing up on DegreeWorks. Why not?DegreeWorks only recognizes classes that have been approved by the State as electives. It will not automatically appear in the major when you sign up for it. Here’s the process:

What electives can I take in Media Studies? The classes listed in DegreeWorks are:
Electives outside of Media Studies
Can any class in Media Studies count as an elective in the Advertising major? No. Can you explain 281 or 381 classes? When the department tries out new courses, it is not immediately given an official course number. Instead, it is designated as a 281 (or 381) course. This is why you will see several courses with the same number almost every semester. These classes are known as VT, or variable topics, classes, and they can be taken more than once because the class is not the same each time. How do I learn about what electives are going to be offered in the upcoming semester?Attend the mandatory meeting. Every semester, Professor Einstein provides students with a list of what electives will be offered weeks in advance of registration. |
