Admission to the Master of Arts in Music Theory Program

How to Apply to the Aaron Copland School of Music

Applications for the MA in Music Theory do not require an audition; at the application site you can upload or request all application materials, including transcripts, writing sample(s), personal statement, and names of your recommenders. All applicants should submit at least one recent paper on a topic related to music, preferably analytic in nature, along with one or two examples of composition in 18th– or 19th-century style.

Applicants for the MA in Music Theory require an undergraduate degree with a major in music or equivalent. You may apply during the final year of your undergraduate program, however full admission to the master’s degree program requires that the undergraduate degree has been awarded.

International students whose primary language is not English are required to take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System). The minimum score is 100 for TOEFL and 7.0 for the IELTS. Please be aware that applicants for the MA in Musicology are no longer required to take the GRE (Graduate Record Examination).

At the beginning of the first semester, students will sit the diagnostic examination in music history, theory, and basic keyboard skills. This examination is for placement purposes; students who pass the exam will be exempt from some classes.
