Bachelor of Music in Music Education

Bachelor of Music in Music Education

Admission to the Bachelor of Music in Education is by audition. Open to instrumental and vocal students planning for a career in elementary and secondary teaching within the NYS public and private school systems, our degree program combines a conservatory-style grounding in musical performance, the academics of a liberal arts degree, and specialized instruction in music pedagogy and teaching methods. Graduates receive the New York State Initial Teacher Certification in Music PreK-12. All students take individual lessons on their principal instrument for six semesters and one semester of full-time student teaching. Student teaching placements prioritize schools with extensive music education programs in both urban and sub-urban settings. Students get ample opportunities to perform in large and small ensembles. Our curriculum includes required courses in musicianship, music theory, and music history.

Students who are interested in combining performance and music education can apply for admission to the five-year degree program, in which students complete the full BMus Performance curriculum alongside New York State Initial Teacher Certification for classroom teaching.

We also offer the BA in Music, in which students take fewer music performance and higher-level music theory requirements, permitting students to take a broader liberal arts program, as well as minors in Music & Production, Music Theory, and Music Literature that are open to students in any undergraduate degree program at Queens College.

International students who do not yet have the English-language skills for university study are encouraged to consider our International Music Performance Program.
