Is IACUC approval needed for use of animals in teaching activities?

Yes 

My grant is for 4 years can I get IACUC approval for 4 years as well?
No, NIH mandates that every project receive full review and protocol every 3 years. 

My research involves collaboration on animal use at another institution. Do I need IACUC approval?
Please reach out to the office for guidance on your research collaboration.

My animals are used for learning studies and are healthy after being used. Can I give these to other researchers for their studies?
Only if both you and the designated study have prior IACUC approval. 

May I bring animals in that were bred at other research institutions?
Yes, but only with approval of the veterinarian. Animals that will be housed in the facility must be kept in quarantine for up to 12 weeks.

Animal Facility

FACILITIES:

The Manager of the Animal Facility is responsible for the care of all research animals maintained at Queens College. The facilities are located in Science Building and Remsen Hall this includes rooms for housing, testing, quarantine, and surgical procedures.

The facility staff provides animal husbandry services and monitor all animals daily.

ORDERING ANIMALS:

All animal orders must be placed by the Facility Director from approved animal vendors. To order animals review the policy on animal ordering guidelines. Transfer of animals from other institutions must get prior approval from the Facility Manager and IACUC Committee. The Facility Manager must also be consulted about any animals requiring special housing or feeding needs.

TRAINING:

All individuals working on animal protocols must be approved by IACUC office. They will also need to be trained by the Principal Investigator as well as Facility Manager before they may work with animals. Animal facility manager and/or veterinary technician training will include general handling of animals and maintenance.
