Soccer Icon David Villa Introduces His DV7 Soccer Academy Methods to Queeens College's Summer Camp

-- World Cup Champion and New York City Football Club Captain Villa to Participate in Sessions with Children Ages 8 to 16 --

FLUSHING, NY, April 14, 2016—In a press conference yesterday at Queens College, David Villa—World Cup champion, top goal scorer for the Spanish National Soccer Team, and captain and first-ever player for the New York City Football Club (NYCFC)—announced that his DV7 Soccer Academy Spanish soccer methods will be taught at Queens College’s Summer Camp. The sessions, beginning July 25 and August 1, will be directed by professional soccer coach and director of Villa’s DV7 Academy, Josep Gombau Balaguer. Villa will participate in a training session with each group of children, observing their play and providing feedback.
“In this camp I want to teach the children the concepts and the values that I have learned throughout my soccer career. It is an unparalleled and special opportunity to be able to begin this project in such a diverse and soccer-passionate community as Queens,” said Villa of his partnership with Queens College.
“We are grateful to Assembly Member Francisco P. Moya for bringing Queens College and the legendary David Villa together to create an opportunity for children to learn the game of soccer under the eyes of a first-rate team of coaches,” said Queens College President Félix V. Matos Rodríguez. “Over the years, Queens College’s summer camp has enriched the lives of tens of thousands of children through instruction in sports as well as in computers, math, reading, writing, science, theatre, and dance. We are honored that David Villa’s DV7 Soccer Academy sees the value of having a partnership with the college, for just as we take great pride in having some of the world’s finest faculty in our classrooms, we are equally proud to be able to offer our campers the absolute best in soccer instruction.”
Camp sessions will run from July 25 through July 29 and August 1 through August 5, from 9 am to 4 pm daily. Each participant will receive two full DV7 Soccer Academy kits, including jerseys, shorts, and socks; an Adidas mini soccer ball signed by David Villa; and a certificate of completion for David Villa’s DV7 Soccer Academy @ Queens College Summer Camp 2016. The cost is $695 per week. Participants will benefit from the same exceptional experience that Queen College’s Summer Camp has offered throughout the years. The registration link is
“As Technical Director of the DV7 Soccer Academy, it is a great pleasure for me to be part of the David Villa’s DV7 Soccer Academy @ Queens College Summer Camp. Our goal is to transmit to young players the Spanish soccer philosophy using technical concepts such as running with the ball, dribbling, control passing, shooting, and decision making. We will implement these concepts while offering a fun and exciting experience to all the children in our camp,” said Gombau Balaguer.
This year, Villa began to develop a series of youth academies to promote the culture and growth of soccer in America. The first DV7 Soccer Academy opened last January in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. (DV7 is a combination of David Villa’s initials and his jersey number.) Villa’s association with the college was facilitated by New York State Assembly Member Francisco P. Moya.
“I am thrilled to see the DV7 Academy come to fruition jointly with Queens College. Not only am I a die-hard soccer fan that sees the potential to help young people throughout Queens by learning the world’s beautiful game, I could not pick two organizations I believe in more to unite on this effort,” said Moya. “From day one I understood David Villa's vision to bring world-class coaches and techniques to Queens, and CUNY and Queens College's dedication to our communities. It was a simple choice to bring the two together for this new venture and I am excited to see it grow.”
David Villa has played for the top teams in the world throughout the Spanish first division, including FC Barcelona, Valencia CF, Atlético de Madrid, Sporting de Gijón, and Real Zaragoza. Villa has won a total of 14 titles for nation and club throughout his illustrious career, including Champions League, La Liga, Spanish King’s Cup, Euro Cup 2008, and World Cup 2010, where he was the tournament’s top scorer with five goals.
