Children's Literature: Grades 1-6 Advanced Study Certificate

EECE 742 Reading Materials for Children

3 cr

Students critically examine a wide range of children's literature. Topics of study include: picture books, traditional literature, fantasy, poetry, realistic fiction, biography, historical fiction, nonfiction, and classics. Teaching strategies for the use of this literature are addressed.

EECE 746 Nonfiction for Children

 3 cr

Students become acquainted with quality nonfiction books for children, and explore ways to promote children's comprehension and appreciation of informational books. Strategies for reading, writing, and discussion of nonfiction literature are addressed.

EECE 747 Poetry for Children

 3 cr

This course introduces students to a wide variety of poetry and verse suitable for children, as well as strategies for writing poetry with children, presenting poetry aloud, and making poetry a central part of classroom life. 

EECE 748 Myths, Legends, and Folktales

3 cr

Students examine the traditional roots of a story as a model for better understanding and coping with the complexities of human existence. Through extensive reading and library research, students consider the significance of these prototypes for the study of literature and for the elementary school curriculum.


EECE 779 Research in Children's Literature

3 cr

This course focuses on exemplary research in the field of children's literature, familiarizing students with professional journals, and introducing students to noteworthy professional books.
