Undergraduate Admissions

How to Apply to the Aaron Copland School of Music

Each of our undergraduate programs requires an audition that supplements the Queens College application process; please ensure that you complete both the college application AND the audition request using the links below.

Step One

SUBMIT AN APPLICATION TO QUEENS COLLEGE

Applicants should not wait for their Queens College application decision before proceeding to Step Two.

The portal will ask for identifying details, your high school transcripts, a letter of recommendation, your college essay, and other supporting documents. The application is the same as for other CUNY colleges and similar to applications for colleges around the country.

High-achieving first-time college students should consider applying to the Macaulay Honors College, which covers all tuition costs for in-state students, and provides many other opportunities. Be aware that the deadlines for admission to the Maccaulay Honors College are earlier than those for general admission to Queens College.

Step Two

SUBMIT AN APPLICATION ON ACCEPTD

The ACSM team uses Acceptd to manage audition requests. At this site you can schedule your live audition, placement exam, and communicate directly with the ACSM admissions team.

Spring Entry Deadline: December 1

Fall Entry Deadline: February 1

Step Three

ATTEND YOUR AUDITION

On the day of your audition, you will play before a panel consisting of ACSM faculty.

All applicants also take a short, written test in the rudiments of music theory as well as a test in musicianship, including keyboard skills, sight singing, and melodic dictation. These tests are given solely to determine the student’s level of preparation. The results are not entered into the permanent record but are used to determine section assignments in theory, ear training, and keyboard classes.

Students who already have a background in music theory and would like to be exempted from some required classes in theory and musicianship are permitted to take the advanced placement test in music theory. The advanced test includes figured bass realization, melody harmonization, species counterpoint, and keyboard harmony.
