On Wednesday December 6th 2017, The Student Council of the Asian/American Center held a student forum on civic participation and shared their experiences working as volunteers for AALDEF Exit Poll Survey for the 2017 Local Election. The talk included a presentation of AALDEF’s results from their Exit Poll Survey by Jerry Vatamala, the director of the democracy program at AALDEF.

Asian American Heritage Month Celebration

A Discussion on Race, Equality, and Asian Americans in Higher Education

On May 3rd, 2017, The Asian/American Center of Queens College celebrated Asian American Heritage Month with students, faculty, and community members. Asian/American Center Scholarship recipients were announced by Ms. Eugenia Ames, the scholarship donor. English and American Studies Professor Bette Weidman was honored for her fifteen years of service on Asian/American Center’s Advisory Board. Civil Rights Attorney Elizabeth OuYang, Esq. delivered a speech on the topic of race, equality, and Asian Americans in higher education followed by a panel discussion with Professors Madhulika Khandelwal, Nathalis Wamba and Alpana Bhattacharya.

Lunar New Year Celebration – A Discussion on Immigration, Race, & Social Justice

Students, faculty, and community members gathered on February 15, 2017 at the Godwin-Ternbach Museum of Queens College to celebrate the Year of the Rooster by discussing current events, honoring long-time civil rights advocates, and listening to traditional Chinese music. The honorees at this celebration were Professor Pyong Gap Min, Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Stanley Mark esq., a civil rights attorney from the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund. Professor Chen Tao and Professor Liu Li of Melody Dragon Inc. performed using Chinese instruments and explained the significance of the traditional songs.

PROTECTING IMMIGRANT RIGHTS

The Asian/American Center partnered with Sadhana: Coalition of Progressive Hindus to host an event on March 1, 2017 about immigrant rights. The program began with moving testimonies by two young women activists, Davanie Singhroy from Sadhana and Zeinab Akberzai from Women for Afghan Women, which were followed by a “Know Your Rights Workshop” by representatives from the NYC Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs, Brooklyn Defender Services, and Faith in NY. Useful information to protect immigrant rights was imparted to a diverse group of students of Queens College.
