Mathematics Department FAQ
Q: I want to declare my undergraduate major in Mathematics. What do I do?
Review the undergraduate programs and their respective requirements. Each concentration has different objectives and you can switch between them, as well as into and out of the concentration, quite easily. Once you are ready to declare your major (except Data Science), email the filled declaration form to the department at Math@qc.cuny.edu for signature. Those who wish to declare a concentration in Data Science must send the completed form to Data Science Advisor for signature.
Q: I’ve taken some math classes at another college (either as a transfer student or for my first degree) but the credits did not transfer correctly. What should I do?
For credit evaluation, if the math credit(s) were taken at
- another United States school, then email Dr. Alan Sultan at Alan.Sultan@qc.cuny.edu
- a school outside of United States, then email Mr. Blendi Koroveshi at Blendi.Koroveshi@qc.cuny.edu
Documents needed when sending email to the evaluator:
- Syllabus or detail course description (obtain from the HOME school’s website not handwritten)
- transcript to show the grade received
- Transfer credit Evaluation form (only filled out the information on top and shaded portion, the rest will be from the advisor.)
Q: Where do I go if I have trouble in the Math class I'm taking now and need tutoring?
We have a Math Lab located in Kiely Hall room 331 that offers free tutoring to students taking 100-level courses (excluding Math 110), and to the extent possible, on 201, 223, 231 & 241. For more detail, please visit Math lab.
Q: What is the minimum grade needed to move on to the next level Math course?
For all mathematics courses, the minimum grade needed to move on from one level to the next is C- except the following cases:
- To move from MATH 115 to any section of MATH 131, you need a minimum grade of A- in MATH 115. (However, there is a special extended section of MATH 131 which you will need a minimum grade of B- in MATH 115.)
- To move from MATH 122 to MATH 151, you need a minimum grade of B- in MATH 122.
Q: I have completed the prerequisite or I was placed into a math course yet I cannot enroll in classes via CUNYFirst because of prerequisite blocks. What should I do?
Please send your email to MathRegistration@qc.cuny.edu using your college issued email and include all necessary information for office staff to review and assist.
If you are a non-degree or visiting student from a non-CUNY school, please also attach your unofficial transcript so our office staff can verify the prerequisite.
Q: There is a problem with Degreeworks. It says that I am missing credits, courses, or courses did not apply to the proper field. What do I do?
Please take a screenshot of the Degreeworks page and email the major advisor. It is possible that the degree requirements have changed since you entered the major, and your new requirements will be handled manually.
Q: I disagree with the grade that a professor gave me. What can I do?
According to the campus bylaws, the only person who can change your grade is the professor who gave the grade. The Undergraduate Scholastic Committee (USC) only has the authority to cancel the grade if it finds that the grade is inappropriate. Therefore, communicate with the professor first. If you are not satisfied with the answer from the instructor, then contact the deputy chair of the department, Mr. Steven Kahan, at Steven.Kahan@qc.cuny.edu for a further review. Finally, if you are still not satisfied, then you can file an appeal to USC.
