Grants.gov and Major Funding Information
The majority of federal agencies have funding for investigator-initiated programs, research projects, training initiatives, and other educational programs. All federal grant opportunities must be posted on the federal repository site known as Grants.gov. This site serves as a resource for finding funding as well as a portal for submitting grant applications. You do not need to register to use this site for downloading a grant application or grant announcement. Grants are awarded to the institution and therefore Queens College is already registered with Grants.gov. Only the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs can submit a grant application. In addition to Grants.gov, each funding agency has its own website that contains more funding information and resources for preparing a grant application. Most of the federal agencies provide tips for preparing your application, links to currently funded grants, and descriptive guides about what types of research and other program activities they are likely to fund.
Below are links to some of the larger federal agencies and departments.
- National Science Foundation. NSF has programs in the basic sciences, engineering, social sciences, and education.
- National Institutes of Health. NIH comprises different institutes, including the National Cancer Institute; National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute; National Institute for Childhood and Human Development; and the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
- Department of Energy. Funds basic and applied research.
- Defense Department (including the Army, Navy, and Air Force). Funds both basic physical sciences and social sciences and some biomedical programs.
- U.S. Department of Education. USDOE funds basic research in education and training programs and services for schools and children. Generally speaking, most USDOE programs restrict funding to local school districts; we encourage faculty with active school-based partnerships to pursue funding in these areas.
- Environmental Protection Agency
- U.S. Department of Agriculture
- NASA (National Aeronautic and Space Administration)
- U.S. Department of Justice
- National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
- U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This massive federal department houses such agencies as the Centers for Disease Control, the Administration on Aging, and the Food and Drug Administration, as well as the National Institutes of Health.
