Winners of the 2013 NADRI Dissertation Scholarship Program
We are pleased to announce the three winners of the 2013 Nadri Dissertation Scholarship Program. This year, Nadri Jewelry Incorporated was generous enough to provide funds for three dissertation scholarships of $3,000 each. Every year since the inception of the Research Center for Korean Community, we have awarded dissertation scholarships to doctoral students conducting research on Korean Americans. The selection committee had a particularly difficult time deciding on winners, as this year’s contest was very competitive due to the high quality of proposals that were submitted.
This year’s winners are Sou Hyun Jang of the CUNY Graduate Center (“Korean Immigrants’ Medical Tourism to Homeland”), Chunrye Kim of the John Jay College of Criminal Justice (“Intimate Partner Sexual Violence Among Korean Immigrants”), and Stephen Suh of the University of Minnesota (“Nostalgic for the Unfamiliar”).
Sou Hyun Jang’s dissertation, titled “Korean Immigrants’ Medical Tourism to Homeland,” systematically examines the phenomenon of Korean immigrants traveling to Korea, one of the “hot destinations for medical tourism,” specifically to receive medical care. Chunrye Kims’s dissertation, titled “Intimate Partner Sexual Violence Among Korean Immigrants,” seeks to assess intimate partner sexual violence and their psycho-cultural determinants among Korean immigrants in New York City. Stephen Suh’s dissertation, titled “Nostalgic for the Unfamiliar,” examines the growing trend of ethnic return migration through the perspective of Korean-American “returnees.”

Once again, we would like to thank Nadri Jewelry Incorporated for generously providing the funds for our annual dissertation scholarship program. We would also like to thank all of the scholars who submitted proposals for participating in this contest. All of the submitted proposals were interesting and well-written, and based on the scoring criteria, the margins separating the proposals were very slim.
