Program Information
Session 1: Art & Architecture

Location & Dates:​

Location: Florence, Italy

NY Departure and Return Dates: June 1 – June 27, 2025

Arrive in Rome on June 2nd

Credits: 4 credits

Course: Art & Architecture (3 ARTH credits) + Cultural Introduction to Italy (1 ITAL credit)

Syllabus

After spending an introductory week touring Central Italy with your group, you will arrive in Florence to take the Art & Architecture course. This course explores the principal architects, monuments, and themes of fifteenth and sixteenth century Italian architecture. Emphasis will be placed on Renaissance architecture in Florence, but the course will also consider architectural developments in other major Italian cities.

Most lessons will include a lecture in class and an on-site visit in Florence. Topics in focus will include: architectural theory, the relation between architecture, painting and sculpture, patronage, urban planning and church and palace design.

Attention will be given to specific artists: Filippo Brunelleschi, Leon Battista Alberti, Lorenzo Ghiberti, Masaccio, Michelozzo, Donatello, Bernardo Buontalenti, Giorgio Vasari, Sandro Botticelli, Bramante, Michelangelo, and Palladio.

Syllabus

After spending an introductory week touring Central Italy with your group, you will arrive in Florence to take the Florence Sketchbook course. This course is designed to take full advantage of the student’s unique experiences living and studying in the city of Florence. With on-site inspiration channeled into artistic creativity, students will draw on location at sites of historical significance and visual interest, ranging from architectural masterpieces, landscape vistas, and medieval streets to formal gardens, street markets, and Renaissance fountains.

Session 2: Food, Health, and Wellness
*One Mandatory Weekend Field Learning Activity 7/12*

Course: Food, Health, and Wellness (3 FNES credits) + Cultural Introduction to Italy (1 ITAL credit)

Syllabus

After spending an introductory week touring Central Italy with your group, you will arrive in Florence to take the Food, Health, and Wellness course. This course will provide students with a complete overview of how food can be the basis of wellness, along with the practice of a positive lifestyle, through cultural understanding and integration with the local community. Particular emphasis will be placed, through discussions and direct practice, on seasonality and nutritional principles, whole foods, freshness, traditional customs, and contemporary innovation. This course has an additional $140 lab fee.

Session 2: Lifetime Nutrition, Wellness, and Physical Activity

Location: Florence, Italy

Course: Lifetime Nutrition, Wellness, and Physical Activity (3 FNES credits) + Cultural Introduction to Italy (1 ITAL credit)

Syllabus

After spending an introductory week touring Central Italy with your group, you will arrive in Florence to take the Lifetime Nutrition, Wellness, and Physical Activity course. This course offers a comprehensive approach to wellness, nutrition, and fitness from a lifetime perspective. Theoretical core concepts of how dietary and fitness needs are correlated to mental health and adapt according to each life-stage will be addressed along with a comparative focus on the Italian and Mediterranean approach. This course has an additional $140 lab fee.

Course: Food, Culture, & Society (3 FNES credits) + Cultural Introduction to Italy (1 ITAL credit)

Syllabus

After spending an introductory week touring Central Italy with your group, you will arrive in Florence to take the Food, Culture, and Society course. This course is targeted towards students with an interest in Italian food traditions, society, and culture. The main focus consists of what is generally defined as “made in Italy” culture and style in post-war Italy. This course has an additional $140 lab fee.
