Secondary Bilingual Education Extension program (7–12)

Offers certified teachers across academic disciplines a 15 graduate credit course sequence leading to a NYS Bilingual Extension Certificate in grades 7-12.

Key Program Admission Requirements:
• Have an undergraduate graduate degree with at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average or its equivalent;
• Hold a current New York State Initial Certificate in a subject matter area at the secondary level (7-12);
• Demonstrate language proficiency in another language used for instruction in NY schools, including Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Bengali, Urdu, French, Haitian Creole, Russian, Arabic, Punjabi, etc.

Program Course Requirements:
The program coursework consists of courses in the history and theories of bilingualism and bilingual education and multicultural and global education, linguistic, socio-cultural, and psycholinguistic aspects of bilingualism, discipline specific biliteracy curriculum, instruction, and assessment at the secondary level.  All courses have a component of the guided field experience and are taught as either online or hybrid online courses.

MSEd in Mathematics and Bilingual Education (7–12)

This MS Ed program is designed for students who have attained an initial certification in mathematics (grades 7-12) and are themselves proficient in a Language Other Than English (LOTE) who wish to gain professional certification as mathematics teachers as well as a bilingual extension.

The program provides coursework in education, mathematics education and bilingual education as well as guided field experiences to prepare these teachers for the special challenges of teaching mathematics to English language learners who are bilinguals in mainstream as well as bilingual classrooms.  The 30-credit course of study required leads to professional certification in mathematics (grades 7-12) as well as the New York State Bilingual Extension (7-12).  A total of 50 hours of fieldwork experience is required.

Program Admission Requirement:
• A bachelor’s degree in mathematics and mathematics education from an accredited college or university.
• At least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average in mathematics and secondary education courses.
• New York State Initial Certificate in mathematics at the secondary level (7-12) Bilingual proficiency:  Applicants must demonstrate satisfactory proficiency in a language other than English (LOTE) that they are seeking the extension.
