COIL Faculty Fellowship 2022-2023

Are you interested in creating impactful global learning for your students? Do you want to connect with faculty across national borders? 

The Office of the Provost at Queens College is pleased to announce the 2022-2023 Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) Faculty Fellowships. In keeping with the international goals of Queens College (QC) and working closely with the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, & Leadership, the workshops will provide faculty support in the development of COIL into their courses. 

The aim of the COIL Faculty Fellowships is to offer select faculty the opportunity to learn about Collaborative Online International Learning, develop strategies for incorporating it into their courses, advance research with international colleagues, and expand QC’s global presence. 

Adding a COIL component to your course offers your students an opportunity to interact globally through virtual exchange without additional costs associated with physical mobility. While the COIL component takes place solely online, your course may be face-to-face, hybrid or fully online. Courses may be existing courses or new courses.

COIL Faculty Fellowship Structure

The semester-long program will require:

• Attendance at three Fall 2022 workshops during free hour (12pm-2pm) on: October 12th, November 9th, and December 7th. The workshops will offer a brief introduction to COIL and an opportunity for attendees to discuss COIL implementation in their courses. 
• Completion of assignments ahead of workshops to allow focused-time on workshop activities. 
• Engagement/collaboration with a faculty partner abroad to co-develop a student project or assignment. 
• Expectation to present on December 7th. 
• Commitment to teach a COIL-type course in Spring 2023 or Summer 2023. 

Faculty selected for the program will receive:

• Structured support via the workshops and informal support via the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, & Leadership. 
• A stipend of $600 ($300 in Fall 2022 when all 3 workshops are completed and $300 when COIL is implemented in Spring/Summer 2023). 

Eligibility 

COIL Faculty Fellowships are open to all Queens College faculty members, from any discipline, who are interested in designing a new COIL course or incorporate COIL principles into an existing course. 

Courses may be face-to-face, hybrid or fully online. 

Priority will be given to faculty with an existing international faculty contact or partner.

Describe how incorporating COIL would enhance your students’ cross-cultural engagement opportunities. You may briefly describe a sample assignment or potential tools/technology that may be used.
