To all SharePoint users:

The recent release of Firefox browser version 30 has created complications for content editors who rely on Firefox and don’t use Windows.

Please be aware that this issue DOES NOT AFFECT YOU if:

• You use Windows, and/or
• You do not use Firefox.

SITUATION

Content editors who have recently updated to Firefox version 30 on a non-Windows platform get a 401 Unauthorized Error message when trying to log on to these QC SharePoint sites:

• Queens College website
• MyQC sites (including Forms Center and Collaboration Sites)
• People@QC sites
• MySite sites
• Any other SharePoint sites hosted under the “qc.cuny.edu” domain

BACKGROUND

Firefox version 30 has disabled support for NTLMv1 authentication, and NTLM authentication on non-Windows platforms will no longer work. So, by default, non-Windows users who have upgraded to Firefox version 30 can no longer log on to IIS-authenticated websites, including our SharePoint sites, while using NTLM.

RESOLUTION

To re-enable the ability to log in to SharePoint and perform content editor duties, you can choose any one of the options below:

• Follow these four manual steps to re-enable NTLM authentication on Firefox version 30.
  1. Open Firefox v. 30.
  2. Type “about:config” in the location bar.
  3. Click the “I’ll be careful” button.
  4. Find “network.negotiate-auth.allow-insecure-ntlm-v1” and double-click on it to change the value to “true.”
• Use a different browser (the latest Safari or Chrome both still work).
• Downgrade Firefox back to version 29.
• Use a Windows machine.
