About

Soribel Genao, PhD, is a scholar, practitioner, and Full Professor of Educational Leadership at Queens College, City University of New York. Her academic work focuses on culturally responsive leadership, educational equity, higher education leadership, faculty development, and organizational culture within educational institutions. She has held a range of academic leadership roles, including Deputy Chair of Education and Community Programs, Program Coordinator for Educational Leadership and Bi/Multilingual Extension, Provost Diversity Faculty Fellow, and Professional Staff Congress Grievance Counselor. 

Dr Genao earned her doctorate in Public Administration with a concentration in Urban Education from Rutgers University, Newark, where her research examined the effectiveness of alternative education collaboratives in improving student outcomes in urban contexts. She also holds a Master of Science in Urban Affairs and Planning from Hunter College, City University of New York, and a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communications from St John’s University with additional academic study in South Africa and Ghana. 

Her scholarship appears in leading peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of School Leadership, International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education, Intercultural Education, Multicultural Learning and Teaching and Education, and Urban Society. She currently serves as Chief Editor of the Journal of School Leadership. Her research examines leadership identity, race, gender, power, faculty and student experiences, and the institutional conditions that shape equity, belonging, and professional sustainability in higher education. 

Dr. Genao is deeply engaged in doctoral education and mentorship and has chaired and supervised dissertations across educational leadership, public administration, and human services. Her teaching spans doctoral, master’s, and undergraduate levels, with courses in educational leadership theory, curriculum, supervision management for teaching and learning, and culturally responsive education and evaluation. Across her academic work, she advances scholarship and practice grounded in rigor reflexivity and a commitment to justice-oriented leadership.
