Mission and Goal

The mission of the Department of Linguistics, TESOL, and Communication Sciences & Disorders reflects the QC motto by focusing on our three areas of specialization:

Linguistics, a liberal arts field defined as the scientific study of language,
Speech-Language Pathology/Communication Sciences and Disorders, a health care field serving individuals with speech, language, communication and swallowing challenges, and
Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), an educational field that works to advance instruction for multilingual learners, particularly those in New York State schools.

Those three areas are characterized by the intersection of language and communication more broadly with a unifying theme of diversity — diversity of languages and dialects, diverse modes of communication, neurodiversity, and diverse cognitive, motor, social, and physical capabilities. Our department sees these differences as reflections of human diversity, and in particular that found in the rich cultural landscape in the World’s Borough. We teach about and do research on different aspects of this uniting theme. Our goal is to support our students and readers of our research and help them serve their communities with deeper understanding of and appreciation for the diversity of human communication.
