Master of Arts in Music Theory
Master of Arts in Music Theory
The Master of Arts in Music Theory was conceived as a preparatory program for students hoping to continue onto a doctoral degree; the MA in Music Theory is ideal for any student wanting to think deeply about the way music is constructed. Classes provide a solid foundation in music theory and analysis; students are introduced to critical thinking, disciplinary literacy, and recent trends in music scholarship. Students work closely with faculty mentors to develop research skills, analytic techniques and written fluency; the degree culminates in the completion of a master’s thesis. After the completion of the first semester, students are able to enroll in a select number of doctoral seminars at the CUNY Graduate Center.
