Biographical Information:
William Rothstein is the author of Phrase Rhythm in Tonal Music (1989) and The Musical Language of Italian Opera, 1813–1859 (2023). Both books received an ASCAP–Deems Taylor Award. His many publications examine Western art music from Arcangelo Corelli to Donald Martino, with particular focus on the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. He is an authority on the theories of Heinrich Schenker and theories of musical rhythm. Before joining the Queens College faculty in 1998, he taught at Amherst College, the University of Michigan, and Oberlin College. He also taught analysis and the history of music theory at the CUNY Graduate Center.
