I fell in love with the music library because I fell in love with the music librarian. He never gave me a second look, but I listened to and learned about wonderful music!
Most of the friends that I have today I met on the first day of college – 54 years ago! Most of us have last names starting with letters near each other in the alphabet- since we registered alphabetically.
Queens College changed my life. My sister and I both graduated from Queens College, and were the first in our family to graduate college. I majored in elementary education. I went on to get a certificate in occupational therapy from NYU and then a masters degree in special education also from NYU.
During my career I was part of an outreach team for St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York City where our team worked with children with problems right in their school. That way, we could offer the teacher support and be part of the child’s environment. My initial degree in elementary education from Queens helped so much.
Queens College provided me with an excellent education in economics and also exposed me to a rich liberal arts curriculum, which exposed me to the arts, other religions and cultures. As a student with limited funds, I was also very appreciative of the financial aid package which allowed me to obtain my BA in economics. I will always be appreciative of my experiences at Queens College.
I appreciate all the hard work and dedication of the administration and faculty at Queens College. Thank you so much!
I was a member of the Queens College Bench and Bar Association (Forensics Team). Professor Dov Hahn was our coach. We won many awards, but it was the teamwork that made it great. I owe my success to the wonderful professors of Queens College.
My favorite memory of Queens College was painting on the quad on a perfect spring day for my water color class.
I spent a great deal of time at the Hillel lounge in the Student Center. Here are my two enjoyable QC experiences:
I noticed a well-dressed man would sit in the corner of the lounge by himself reviewing paperwork. One day I went over to make small talk and found out it was Isaac Bashevis Singer.
Professor Brodsky was distributing posters for a foreign poet, Yevgeny Yevtushenko, whom he had invited to speak at the Felt Forum at Madison Square Garden. I took one and decorated my room. Later on, Yevtushenko was a guest at a Houston Jewish Book Fair, where I settled, many decades later. My mother sent me the poster which “freaked him out” when I showed him. We spoke and he autographed it.
That religious association with Hillel gave me the incentive to attend Jewish student functions outside QC, where ultimately two wallflowers met. Laura and I have been married 47 years.
I met a young man (Philip B. Yacht ’65) in my CC2 class in June 1962. We will be married 60 years in July. What could be better than that?
I remember when we (women) were protesting about being allowed to wear pants. Probably around 1960. Wow, no rebels there!
I remember the two temporary trailers in the back of the campus where some classes were held. I took an Urban Studies class in one – during winter- very cold.
I remember the pool table in the Student Union. We played occasionally to reduce our stress. Haha! It was great school.
Some of my memories include: Freshman year making a schedule one class right after the other – and RUNNING to different buildings (not thinking classes were in diff sitting in the different buildings!)… Sitting on the quad… Meeting friends and hanging out in the Student Union… Only finding out there was a “bar” towards my senior year!
Now I’ll remember this 40th celebration. Thank you so much for today! My days at Queens College were during a sad time for me. I did not get involved like I would have. I attended my graduation but did not “walk” (my mom was not happy!) Thank you for today– I was happy to be able to “right” a “wrong”. Many thanks!
Truly grateful for the free education which allowed me to be an educator for 40 years: 18 years in middle school, 18 years in senior high school and 4 years as a mentor to beginning teachers. I taught mathematics, was a grade advisor and a tennis coach. In addition, I got a job each summer through the placement office, including the NY World’s Fair in ’64 and ’65. I received my masters degree from QC, as well as 2 sabbaticals. Much thanks!
