Joel Mandelbaum

Dr. Joel Mandelbaum was born in New York City, NY in 1932. He graduated from Harvard University with a bachelor’s in music in 1953, received an M.F.A in Musical Composition from Brandeis University in 1957, and a Ph.D. from Indiana University in 1961. Dr. Mandelbaum’s dissertation topic, titled “Multiple Division of the Octave and the tonal resources of 19-tone Temperament,” was the first Ph.D. dissertation on microtonality. In his time as a professor at Queens College, Dr. Mandelbaum was Chairman of the Music Department from 1974-1978, Director of the Aaron Copland School of Music from 1981-84, and Chair of the Academic Senate (chief faculty officer) from 1997-99.
