Born in New Jersey but raised in Kew Gardens Hills, Paul Simon (b. 1941) came from a musically inclined family and got an early start to his career as a singer-songwriter, performing for other kids in the neighborhood. The two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee is primarily known as a folk rock artist, one whose collaborations with Art Garfunkel go back to their teen years, but the relatively prolific Simon regularly branched out into other genres over the course of his career. His 1986 album Graceland, Simon’s most successful and arguably most acclaimed, is notable for its collaborations with South African musicians living under apartheid (itself a highly controversial move, as Simon broke the cultural boycott that had been called by the Anti-Apartheid Movement two decades prior). The 16-time Grammy Award winner has contributed music to a number of films and TV programs, and produced a musical, The Capeman, with poet Derek Walcott. Simon was also the first recipient of the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize, in 2007, established to honor annually an artist whose work “promot[es] song as a vehicle of musical expression and cultural understanding.”
