The first person to win an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards) was a Queens native. Richard Rodgers (June 28, 1902 – December 30, 1979) stands as one of the most famous musical composers of the 20th Century, with over 900 songs to his credit. He first became known through his work with lyricist Lorenz Hart, with whom Rodgers wrote several musicals in the 1920s and 1930s, including A Connecticut Yankee (1927), Babes in Arms (1939), and On Your Toes (1939). However, it was via his work with Oscar Hammerstein II in the 1940s and 1950s, on such musicals as Oklahoma! (1955), South Pacific (1958) and The Sound of Music (1965), that Rodgers gained widespread acclaim. His collaborations with Hammerstein are notable for creating shows that, though based on plays and novels, featured original dialogue as well as storytelling that moved seamlessly from speech to song.
