Grading
Your final grade is assigned by your instructor at the end of the semester and becomes part of your permanent academic record. Final grades appear on your transcript and may affect your Grade Point Average (GPA), academic standing, financial aid, graduation requirements, and admission to graduate or professional programs.
Once a final grade is submitted, it is considered final. Grades cannot be changed by completing extra assignments, retaking exams, or auditing a course. If you believe a grade was assigned in error, contact your instructor as soon as possible.
Important Information
- Check your final grades in CUNYfirst after every semester.
- An F grade counts as 0.00 in your GPA and does not earn college credit.
- A P (Pass) grade earns credit but is not included in your GPA.
- An NC (No Credit) grade does not earn credit and is not included in your GPA.
- Withdrawal grades (W, WD, WA, WN, and WU) may affect your academic record, financial aid, and academic progress.
- If you have questions about choosing Pass/No Credit, meet with an Academic Advisor before submitting your request.

Passing grades earn college credit and count toward your degree requirements. Most passing grades are included in your GPA. A P (Pass) grade earns credit but is not included in your GPA.

Failing grades do not earn college credit. Depending on the grade, they may or may not be included in your GPA.

INC (Incomplete)
An INC (Incomplete) may be assigned if you cannot finish a course because of special circumstances and your instructor believes you can complete the remaining work.
- Undergraduate students have until the last day of the following semester to complete the work.
- Graduate students have two semesters to complete the work.
- An INC may also be assigned if you miss the final exam and your instructor approves a make-up exam.
- INC grades are not included in your GPA.
PEN (Pending)
A PEN (Pending) grade is assigned when coursework is being reviewed for a possible academic integrity violation.
- The grade must be resolved by the end of the final examination period of the following semester.
Withdrawal grades are assigned when you officially or administratively leave a course. Depending on the type of withdrawal, these grades may affect your academic record, financial aid, or enrollment status.

| W | Official withdrawal from a course during the withdrawal period. |
| WD | Course dropped after the financial aid certification date during the program adjustment period. You must have attended at least one class. |
| WA | Administrative withdrawal for failure to meet New York State immunization requirements. Students should contact the Health Services Center. |
| WN | Assigned if you never attended the course and did not officially withdraw. |
| WU | Assigned if you stopped attending before the end of the semester and your instructor could not assign a final letter grade. |
Pass/No Credit (P/NC)
The Pass/No Credit (P/NC) option allows eligible undergraduate students to take one course each semester or session without receiving a letter grade. Instead, your grade will appear as Pass (P) or No Credit (NC).
How P/NC Works
- P (Pass) — You earn course credit, but the grade is not included in your GPA.
- NC (No Credit) — You do not earn course credit, and the grade is not included in your GPA.
- Only one course per semester or session may be taken under the P/NC option, if you are eligible.

- Prerequisite courses
- Financial aid
- Graduation
- Graduate or professional school admission
- Academic honors
Eligibility
- Available to eligible undergraduate students.
- You may choose one course each semester or session under the P/NC option.
- Some courses are not eligible, including certain major, Pathways, Writing-Intensive, graduate, and other restricted courses. Review the Undergraduate Bulletin before submitting your request.
How to Apply
P/NC Request Portal
Submit your request online during the published deadline.
Second-Semester Students
Second-semester students may apply until the last day of classes (before final exams begin) by submitting the Pass/No Credit form.
Academic Advising
Meet with an Academic Advisor before choosing the Pass/No Credit option. An advisor can help you understand how P/NC may affect your degree requirements, financial aid, graduation, and future academic plans.
