Pre-professional Major

The Pre-Professional Major is designed for students who wish to pursue graduate studies in Anthropology or a related field, but it also provides the necessary preparation for a variety of other careers.  As with the General Major, students may focus their coursework in one of the four subfields of anthropology (cultural anthropology, biological anthropology, archaeology, or linguistic anthropology) or they may follow a more general track.  To complete a Pre-Professional Major in Anthropology, 2 additional courses beyond the General Major are required, totaling 39 credits.

To declare a Pre-Professional Major in Anthropology, complete this downloadable form, specifying Pre-Professional Major as your concentration, and attach it to an email request to the Department Chair (Professor Larissa Swedell: LSwedell@qc.cuny.edu).

Requirements for the Pre-Professional Major in Anthropology:

Introductory Courses: 3 courses from the following list

Anth 101, Anth 102, Anth 103, Anth 104

Essentials Course: 1 course from the following list

Anth 201, Anth 240, Anth 260, Anth 280

Area Course: 1 course from the folllowing list:

Anth 201 (if not used for Essentials Course requirement), 204-219, 241-249, 282, 388

Required Courses:

Anth 200, Anth 238

Intermediate Electives:

3 additional courses, 2 of which must be at the 200-level or above

Advanced Electives:

3 additional courses at the 300-level

Grades below C- in anthropology courses are not acceptable for majors in Anthropology. Students who have received such grades in any course needed to fulfill the major requirements must retake these courses and achieve a grade of C- or better to be considered for graduation as Anthropology Majors.  No more than 3 credits from independent study and honors thesis courses (Anth 390–397) may be used as part of the Major without special permission.
