Clinical Experience Office

Introduction to Student Teaching, Internships, & Practicum

The office of Professional Practice & Community Partnerships and Clinical Experience Office work continuously to support professional experiences where all of our EPP student teachers/interns can thrive under the wings of exceptional classroom teachers or site supervisors, deepen their understanding of their own aptitudes and talents, and help clarify the type of professional careers they want to pursue.

Whether you are starting your student teaching, internship, or practicum experience or are ready to explore your professional career, we hope you will find the information and contacts below helpful.

Fingerprinting

All candidates in teacher preparation programs must be fingerprinted by NYC Public Schools (formally the NYC DOE). Candidates already fingerprinted by NYC Public Schools must connect their clearance to Queens College.  For detailed information on this requirement click the link below:

EPP Central Student Teaching Application Overview

Application Directions

The EPP Central Student Teaching Application must be completed and submitted through Anthology Portfolio, which requires an active subscription. The application process has three steps:

STEP 1 – Teacher Candidate Information & Application: This section must be completed and signed by teacher candidates who have met all the eligibility criteria listed above (a through g). Candidates are required to sign the Student Teaching Contract, which must be submitted with the application. Only one application is necessary before the first student teaching experience.

STEP 2 – Preliminary Admission to Student Teaching: Program Directors will review and provide an initial recommendation on the application pending the successful completion of courses in progress.

STEP 3 – Fingerprinting Status Review: The Office of Field Placement will verify the student teachers’ fingerprinting status to ensure they have the correct fingerprint clearance. If the candidate lacks the proper clearance, their student teaching central application will be returned, and the Office of Field Placement will contact the candidate with information and next steps via the Queens College email (QMail).

STEP 4 – Final Student Teaching Approval Decision: Program Directors will give final approval after verifying that candidates have successfully met all prerequisites, received grades for courses in progress, and fulfilled GPA requirements.

Appeal Process

Candidates who are not approved for student teaching may appeal the decision. Common reasons to appeal include:

  • Completing pre-requisite courses during Winter or Summer sessions.
  • Receiving fingerprinting clearance after an application decision has been determined.
  • Retaking courses during Winter or Summer sessions to meet program grade requirements.

The appeal process will follow the CUNY Complaint Process as outlined here:
https://www2.cuny.edu/wpcontent/uploads/sites/4/pageassets/about/administration/offices/legalaffairs/PROCEDURES_FOR_HANDLING_STUDENT_COMPLAINTS.pdf

Important Steps:

1. Candidate must contact the Office of Assessment and Accreditation to request an appeal application.
2. The candidate completes and submits the application by the Appeal Application deadlines.
3. The Department Chair, who acts as the fact finder, reviews the appeal application. If there is merit to the appeal and the candidate has demonstrated that they qualify for student teaching, the Department Chair may approve the candidate for student teaching.
4. If the appeal is not upheld and the Department Chair determines that the candidate is not eligible for student teaching, the candidate may appeal to the Dean.

Financial Aid for Student Teachers/Interns

The Professional Practice and Community Partnerships Office works with other Queens College and CUNY offices to provide its EPP students with information on scholarships, grants, loans, and stipends that are available to student teachers/interns. We hope that such opportunities will help bridge the gap between the cost of college and the contributions student teachers/interns and their families are expected to provide.
