Queens native JoAnn Falletta (b. 1954) is a highly decorated and pioneering conductor who is recognized as the first woman to be appointed as a music director for a major American orchestra. She has won two Grammy Awards: in 2018 for Best Classical Compendium (“Fuchs: Piano Concerto ‘Spiritualist’ / Poems of Life / Glacier / Rush”) and in 2020 for Best Choral Performance (Richard Danielpour, “The Passion of Yeshua”). The American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers has described Falletta as “one of the leading forces for music in our time.” She served as a member of the National Council for the Arts during the Bush and Obama administrations and currently serves as the music director for the Buffalo Philharmonic. Falletta is a principal guest conductor for the Brevard (FL) Music Center and is artistic director for the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra.
