An Octoroon

Written by Brandon Jacobs-Jenkins

Directed by Estefania Fadul

October 26 – November 5, 2017

Goldstein Theater
A meta-theatrical melodrama of epic proportions! It’s 1859, and Louisiana plantation Terrebonne is on the brink of bankruptcy. Heir apparent George Peyton arrives and falls in love with Zoe, who is one-eighth black. But the villainous overseer M’Closky will stop at nothing to keep Terrebonne and Zoe for himself. Playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins explodes Dion Boucicault’s 19th-century melodrama with this radical and funny adaptation- a searing look at race in America today.

2016-2017 Season

Cloud 9

Written by Caryl Churchill

Directed by Ana Margineanu

Time hopping between the 1880s and the 1980s, Caryl Churchill’s award winning play examines the sexual mores of the British Empire and how they evolved. The liaisons that began in the darkest parts of British Africa are transported to the streets of London, where the characters learn that the death of the Empire also means the end of their repressed longings and a new awakening.
