Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics is one of eight departments in the School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Queens College. With a strong record of both research and teaching, the department has been home to many outstanding and notable mathematicians, including Banesh Hoffmann, Ravi Kulkarni, Edwin Moise, Arthur Sard, Mike Shub, Dennis Sullivan, and Leo Zippin.

This tradition continues today with faculty research in algebra, analysis, applied mathematics, combinatorics, dynamics, geometry and topology, logic, mathematical physics, and number theory. A strength of our department is its location in a lively metro area with dynamic mathematical activity at the CUNY Graduate Center and over a dozen other nearby institutions.

We are comprised of approximately thirty full-time faculty members and about fifty adjuncts, serving roughly 550 mathematics majors and 3,500 non-majors. We offer pure, applied, primary education, and secondary education undergraduate degrees and are home to the TIME 2000 undergraduate program for prospective secondary mathematics teachers. We also offer graduate level studies that lead to a Masters of Arts in Pure or Applied Mathematics.

Many of our faculty are also members of the Doctoral Faculty at the CUNY Graduate Center, which is the City University of New York campus that offers a comprehensive PhD program in mathematics. In addition to these programs, we take pride in providing essential service courses for students throughout the college.

The Department of Mathematics at Queens College can prepare students who are interested in:
  • Teaching mathematics in elementary or secondary schools
  • Studying computer science or the natural sciences
  • Studying in the areas of statistics, actuarial work, and other applied areas
  • Teaching at the college level
  • Conducting research in mathematics
As part of Queens College and the City University of New York, we are dedicated to the idea that a first-rate education should be accessible to talented individuals of all backgrounds and financial means. Founded in 1937, the college offers an exceptional liberal arts curriculum, with over 115 undergraduate and graduate majors and a variety of specialized honors programs. Its more than 19,000 students come from more than 140 nations and speak scores of languages, creating an extraordinarily diverse and welcoming environment.
