-- O Fortuna, a Selection from
the Cantata, Has Been Popularized In Contemporary Culture in Such Movies as The
Messenger, The Doors, The Hunt For Red October, Glory, and Excalibur
--
FLUSHING,
NY, November 18, 2019—The Queens College Choral Society (QCCS) will perform
Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana on Saturday, December 14, at 8 pm in Colden
Auditorium. Based on medieval texts, this cantata is one of the most popular
choral works of all time, celebrating the joys, sorrows, and passions of life.
Its opening chorus, “O Fortuna,” has permeated popular culture as background
music for such movies as The Messenger, The Doors, The Hunt
For Red October, Glory, and Excalibur.
This
performance will feature the chamber version for two pianos and percussion,
with pianists Max Midroit and Sarang Kim; percussion students from the Aaron
Copland School of Music; and professional soloists Stefanie Izzo, soprano,
Sungwon Jin, tenor, and Sidney Outlaw, baritone. James John, professor of
conducting at the Aaron Copland School of Music and music director of the QCCS,
will conduct.
The
choral society is a “singing organization of and for the public, and the
students and staff of Queens College.” With singers who range from members of
the high school outreach program to individuals who have performed with the
group for more than 40 years, the QCCS is a treasure in the borough. The
society typically offers two concerts per year (in December and May) devoted to
great choral masterpieces—such as Verdi’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah,
and Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis—with orchestral accompaniment. The QCCS
has also premiered multiple works, including pieces composed by Queens College
Music Department faculty.
Tickets are $20 and may be purchased through the Kupferberg
