Program Requirements for Student Teaching

Aaron Copland School of Music

Candidates in Music Education are asked to complete one semester of student teaching, either in the fall or spring semesters. During that semester, they are required to be in their assigned schools every day for a minimum of 14 weeks; 7 1/2 weeks in an elementary (Pk-6) setting and 7 1/2 weeks in a secondary (6-12) setting.

Educational and Community Programs (ECP)

Candidates in the Counselor Education Program are asked to complete one semester of practicum, either in the fall or spring semesters. During that semester, they are required to be in their assigned sites for a minimum of 100 hours. In addition, candidates are required to complete a minimum of 600 hours at the internship level over the course of 2-6 semesters: 300 hours in a K-8 elementary setting and 300 hours in a 9-12 high school setting.

Candidates in Educational Leadership are asked to complete one semester of internship in the spring semester. During that semester, they are required to complete 400-600 hours in a K-12 school or educational setting.

Candidates in the School Psychology program are asked to complete one semester of practicum, during the spring semester. During that semester, they are required to be in their assigned site 1 day a week for the duration of the semester. In addition, candidates are required to complete an academic year (September-June) at the internship level. During the internship year, candidates spend five days a week in placement sites. Placement usually involves 3 days a week in one school and two days in a second school to provide experience with a varied K-12 student population.

Candidates in the Special Education program are asked to complete one semester of internship serving students with severe disabilities, during the summer semester. During that semester, they are required to be in their assigned schools Monday – Thursday for the school day for 6 weeks.

Elementary and Early Childhood Education (EECE)

Candidates in the Undergraduate Program in Elementary Education (Grades 1 – 6) are asked to complete two semesters of student teaching in 1st through 6th grade General Education or Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) classrooms. They are placed in a higher-grade band (4th – 6th grade) for one semester, and a lower-grade band (1st – 3rd grade) for the subsequent semester.

Semester I candidates (EECE 360) are in the field Monday, Tuesday, and Friday, for the full school day.

Semester II candidates (EECE 361) are in the field Monday to Thursday, for the full school day.

Candidates are placed by the Field Placement Office at partner NYC DOE schools located within the borough of Queens.

Candidates in the Graduate Program in Early Childhood Education (Birth – Grade 2) are asked to complete one semester of student teaching in a PreK – 2nd grade General Education or Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) classroom. Candidates are in the field Monday to Thursday, for the full school day.

Candidates are placed by the Field Placement Office at partner NYC DOE schools located within the borough of Queens. Alternatively, students may apply to remain at their place of employment, if applicable. The site will need to be vetted and approved by the Field Placement Office.

Family, Nutrition, and Exercise Sciences

Candidates in the Family & Consumer Sciences program are asked to complete one semester of student teaching during the spring semester. During that semester, they are required to be in their assigned schools a minimum of 22.5 hours per week for a minimum of 14 weeks; 7 1/2 weeks in a middle school setting and 7 1/2 weeks in a high school setting.

Graduate School of Library and Information Studies

Candidates in the School Library Media Specialist program are asked to complete one semester of field observation, either in the fall or spring semesters. During that semester, they are required to complete 100 hours of observation over the course of 15 weeks. Candidates are also required to complete one semester of internship. During that semester, candidates will complete 40 days of internship over the course of 15 weeks: 20 days in an elementary (K-6) setting; and, 20 days in a secondary (7-12) setting.

Linguistics and Communication Disorders

Candidates in the BA in TESOL/Applied Linguistics program are asked to complete one semester of fieldwork (50 hours) and 2 semesters of student teaching either in the fall or spring semesters. Each semester of student teaching requires a minimum of 300 hours. One semester will be completed in an elementary (K-6) setting and one semester in a secondary (7-12) setting.

Candidates in the MSED TESOL program who hold a NYS teaching certificate are asked to complete one semester observation (25 hours), one semester of fieldwork (25 hours), and 1 semester of student teaching either in the fall or spring semesters. The semester of student teaching requires a minimum of 100 hours.

Candidates in the MSED TESOL program who do not hold a NYS teaching certificate are asked to complete one semester of observation (50 hours), one semester of fieldwork (25 hours), and 2 semesters of student teaching either in the fall or spring semesters. Each semester of student teaching requires a minimum of 300 hours. One semester will be completed in an elementary (K-6) setting and one semester in a secondary (7-12) setting.

Candidates in the Post Master’s Advanced Certificate in TESOL program are asked to complete one semester of fieldwork (25 hours) and one semester of student teaching either in the fall or spring semester. The semester of student teaching requires a minimum of 10 days.

Details about student teaching requirements are shared with candidates in the orientation held prior to beginning the program. Candidates and advisors are required to sign a student teaching contract prior to registration.

Secondary Education and Youth Services (SEYS)

Candidates in the Art Education programs are asked to complete 2 semesters of student teaching.

In Fall, candidates complete student teaching I, which encompasses a minimum of 100 hours in an elementary school setting (grades K-6).

In Spring, candidates complete student teaching II, which encompasses a minimum of 240 hours in a middle or high school setting (grades 7-12).

In Spring, candidates complete student teaching which encompasses a minimum of 240 hours. If the candidate completed ICE in a middle school, student teaching will be completed in a high school. If the candidate completed ICE in a high school, student teaching will be completed in a middle school.

Candidates in the Science Education programs must complete two semesters of student teaching.

In the Fall semester, candidates complete Student Teaching I, which encompasses a minimum 180+  hours in a middle- or high-school setting. Please note that the hours listed are for guidance only. We expect that candidates will remain in their placements from mid-September through mid-December. Generally, all student teaching will take place in New York City public schools in the borough of Queens with a school that has a prior relationship with the program.

In the Spring semester, candidates will complete Student Teaching II, which encompasses a minimum 230+ hours in a middle- or high-school setting. Please note that the hours listed are for guidance only. If the candidate completed Student Teaching I in a middle school, Student Teaching II will be completed in a high school. If the candidate completed Student Teaching I in a high school, Student Teaching II will be completed in a middle school. We expect that candidates will remain in their placements from early February through mid-May. Generally, all student teaching will take place in New York City public schools in the borough of Queens with a school that has a prior relationship with the program.

Candidates should recognize that student teaching is the equivalent to a semester-long career interview. The recommendations that candidates receive from field supervisors, cooperating teachers, and science chairpersons are extremely valuable in the search for a full-time position.
