Genetic Variance in Ingestive Responses

The role of genetic variance in ingestive responses has been primarily studied by systematically comparing different inbred strains of mice with an outbred strain. In successive collaborations with Drs. Benjamin Kest (College of Staten Island) and Anthony Sclafani (Brooklyn College), our laboratory characterized the sensitivity, potency and magnitude of responses of 11 inbred (A/J, AKR/J, BALB/cJ, CBA/J, C3H/HeJ, C57BL/6J, C57BL/10J, DBA/2J, SJL/J, SWR/J, 129P3/J) and one outbred (CD-1) mouse strains for sucrose and fat (Intralipid) intake as well as for intake following regulatory glucoprivic (2-deoxy-D-glucose) and lipoprivic (mercaptoacetate) challenges. Our laboratory has also examined alterations in sucrose and Intralipid intake in eight (BALB/cJ, C3H/HeJ, C57BL/6J, C57BL/10J, DBA/2J, SJL/J, SWR/J, 129P3/J) and one outbred (CD-1) mouse strains following opioid and dopamine D1 and D2 receptor antagonism. Ongoing studies are examining whether genetic variance occurs for the development and strength of conditioned flavor preferences.
