GRADUATE STUDENTS

Carol Calle

I mainly analyze grain size data and see how this can help us complete the record of marine transgression in the Long Island Sound. Part of my time is also spent studying local water quality, microplastics, and marine debris patterns in Little Neck Bay and Flushing Bay.

Claire Forrest

My research aims to better understand the dynamic magmatic processes that contribute to and trigger volcanic eruptions. With a focus on the volcanism of The Canary Islands, I use textural and chemical analysis of recorded zoning patterns in crystals to try and reconstruct and better comprehend the complex magmatic systems of these hot spot volcanoes.

Devina Kalika

My focus is to use machine learning to identify Last Interglacial lakes in the Canadian Arctic.

devina.kalika39@qmail.cuny.edu

Diana Garcia Silva

Program focus: Pursuing her MA in Environmental and Geological Science, Diana’s thesis work focuses on describing the development process of statistical vignettes and their potential to illustrate statistical concepts in a fun and engaging manner to learners in STEM. Diana hopes to pursue a career in Environmental Management with a focus on water quality conservation and/or policy practices. In her spare time, she enjoys organizing, reading, relaxing outdoors, watching anime, and spending time with her family, which includes seven dogs.

Evan Ostroff

My field of study is Applied Environmental Geosciences with a focus in hydrology and environmental geology. I am interested in studying the fate, transport, and remediation of organic contaminants.

Evan.ostroff@qmail.cuny.edu

Julia Sandke

Julia’s focus is estuarine biogeochemistry and the impacts of climate change on NY waterways through the study of harmful algal blooms and ocean acidification. She has also worked on applying object detection methods to the benthic ecology of the ASHES Vent Field at Axial Seamount in the Pacific Ocean.

Kimberly Lutchman

As a first-year graduate student pursuing a Master of Science in Applied Environmental Geoscience at Queens College, my goal is to build on the knowledge I gained during my undergraduate studies at SEES. Currently working as an asbestos analyst at an environmental consulting firm that collaborates with prominent government agencies such as Con Edison, DEP, New York Environmental, and NYCHA, I am eager to deepen my expertise in Geosciences. This will allow me to apply these advanced skills in both my current role and future career endeavors alongside participating in graduate research that aligns with my passion in oceanography and paleontology with Cecilia M. McHugh.

Leopoldo Cabassa-Kauffmann

I am in the MS applied Environmental Geosciences program. I am currently involved in research with professor Blanford, working on the fate and transport of organic pollutants in Berea Sandstone.

leopoldo.cabassakauffmann13@qmail.cuny.edu

Nadja Oertelt

Nadja is interested in the effect of urban climate and environmental policies on coastal watersheds.

nadja.oertelt97@qmail.cuny.edu

Rania Taib

Using cosmogenic Be-10 dating to study the deglaciation of the Laurentide Ice Sheet in the lower Hudson Valley.

rania.taib29@qmail.cuny.edu

Tasfia Zaman

My focus is researching calcite dissolution, due to its potential use to remediate toxic substances.
