Welcome to Family and Consumer Sciences Education, where “Linking Learning to Life” is both our motto and our pledge.
The Family and Consumer Sciences Education (FCSE) program at Queens College prepares individuals to become New York certified family and consumer sciences teachers. The FCSE program provides individuals the knowledge and skills in a variety of family and consumer sciences content areas, as well as the professional education required to become competent and committed teachers of today’s adolescents in grades 5 through 12. Teaching family and consumer sciences is a rewarding and challenging career. If you would like to learn more, continue reading to find out which program is right for you.
Fully Online Graduate Programs
Depending on your background, we offer three pathways to get certified in FACS. All the graduate courses in these pathways are delivered fully online, which means you never have to leave your house or come to campus to complete the courses.

Family & Consumer Sciences Programs
Bachelor’s Degree
Bachelor of Arts in Family & Consumer Sciences Education, K-12, Initial Teacher Certification Program
This program leads to a New York State initial certification to teach Family and Consumer Science courses in middle schools and high schools such as Food & Nutrition, Culinary Arts, Child Development, Entrepreneurship, Independent Living, and Home & Career Skills.
Advanced Certificate for Initial Certification
Post Baccalaureate Program for the Initial Certification in Family & Consumer Sciences Teacher Education K-12
This is a fully online program.
The Post Baccalaureate program consists of 21 credits in education and one semester of student teaching (6 cr.) and leads to an Initial Certification in Family and Consumer Sciences. All coursework is delivered fully online, while student teaching and fieldwork is completed by visiting different secondary schools with FACS programs. Each education course requires 20-25 hours of fieldwork and can be completed at a variety of schools throughout New York. Every effort should be made to visit schools with FACS programs. A list of these schools can be obtained from the Program Coordinator. All courses must be completed with a B or better and are only available to matriculated students in the program.

In addition to this program, there are other requirements to complete, including 30 credits in the FACS content area. These content area courses are offered at Queens College in a fully online format.
Since some applicants may come with relevant content in their previous academic coursework, having your transcripts assessed will help you to evaluate the number of credits needed to complete the Advanced Certificate.

Master of Science in Education Fully Online Program Family & Consumer Sciences Education
This program is intended for any certified teacher looking to obtain a master’s degree in Family and Consumer Sciences. This program is only open to individuals who are currently certified teachers and leads to an advanced certification (e.g., a professional state issued certification).
Please note: NYS Department of Education requires a minimum grade of B- for any graduate course to satisfy certification requirements for Professional Certification in teaching.

Whether you are looking to take just one course for professional development or a few courses to meet state requirements for getting certified, the Family and Consumer Sciences Education (FACS) graduate program at Queens College can help you reach your goal.

Setting Up Your QC Accounts
All students at Queens College must utilize their Queens College email to communicate with Professors and Advisors. You will receive important and time sensitive information to that email ONLY and therefore, failure to set up and utilize these accounts may result in missing information that is essential to your success in the FACS program.
Do not delay in setting up these accounts. You will require access to CUNYFirst to pay your bill and register for classes. You will need Blackboard to participate in your courses and email to communicate with your Professors.
