Overview
Online Request for STEM OPT for F-1 Students
STEM OPT gives eligible F-1 students on active Post-Completion OPT an extra 24 months of work authorization. You must have a STEM degree, an E-Verify employer, and submit the STEM OPT Request Form with required documents.
👉 This is the first step to get your new I-20 with a STEM OPT recommendation, which you must have before filing your application with USCIS.
Note: This page is only for students on active Post-Completion OPT seeking the STEM extension. For the standard 12-month OPT, use the OPT Request page instead.
Am I eligible?
Review this quick checklist. You must meet all items:
- You are in F-1 status and currently on active Post-Completion OPT
- Your most recent degree is STEM-eligible (see STEM CIP list)
- Your employer is E-Verify and will provide an E-Verify number
- You will work at least 20 hours per week in a position directly related to your STEM field
- You and your employer will complete Form I-983 (training plan)
- You will file your I-765 with USCIS no earlier than 90 days before your current OPT EAD end date and no later than your OPT EAD end date
If you cannot check all boxes, email ISSO before proceeding.
